In an effort to maximise their marketing communications, marketers are merging advertising and entertainment to create new ways of engaging their consumers with more compelling messages. This technique makes use of either advertainment or branded entertainment.
Advertainment.
The creation of ads that are entertaining or useful, that people really want to watch.
Tonight during your TV viewing critically observe which ads are truly entertaining and which ads you would "zip past" if you were watching on your PVR. I would be most interested in your opinion, I will share with you which ads I find entertaining. Compile a list of the ten most entertaining and the ten worst ads on DSTV.
Branded Entertainment (or brand integrations).
This is where the brand and the entertainment become one in the mind of the consumer.
Think of product placements in the media that you are exposed to, for example what are the judges drinking during Idols? Look out for product placements whilst watching TV, movies, music videos and the like. Again please share where you encounter this technique and share how effective you think it could be for your brand. We watch Masterchef Australia, can any of you remember off-hand what red motorcycle is parked outside their kitchen that we are exposed to on every episode? Please send me a list of ten effective product placements that you have encountered.
Summary.
The goal is for the brand message to become part of the entertainment rather than interrupting it.
Thanks to Phillip Kotler and Gary Armstrong, as a student, then a marketer and later as a lecturer a fantastic source of marketing knowledge.
What do you have to look forward to?

At 14h00 today I went to KTM Cape Town as arranged. Handled all the paperwork and then out on the road. The route that I followed was the N1 towards Paarl, right on the M5 as far as the Red Cross Children's Hospital, around Rondebosch Common, back on the M5 and returned to the dealership via the N1.
My impressions.
WOW, what a good-looking motorcycle, informative and easy to use instrument panel, accelerates instantly, good braking, a very comfortable seat and a very comfortable riding position. Regrettably I am not qualified to talk about the mechanical performance of the motorcycle, I wish that I could tell you that I experienced every one of the 150 bhp, all that I can say is that it has all the power that I would ever require. I am of the opinion that it will be great for those long trips on the open road.
Would I buy one.
Today, if I could sell the BMW R1200R. I cannot justify having more than one motorcycle and a bigger reason is that I cannot afford two motorcycles. Modus operandi, R1200R back on Gumtree, there must be someone out there that would want a beautiful motorcycle in fantastic condition at a reasonable price. Thanks to Charl of KTM Cape Town, an exciting ride on a truly exciting motorcycle. I will find a way to make it happen.
